A young man sat in a forest, gazing out across a still pond. He had his arms wrapped around his body, trying to find some comfort. He turned his gaze to the sky, blue slowly turning to red as the sun set. Red, like the blood that was spilled on his bedroom floor, just hours before.
He looked down at his arm, smiling sardonically. How stupid of me, I can't even try to kill myself right. Cut across the vein, not down it.
He dropped his hand to his knee, sighing unhappily.
My life... Is a waste. I'm not normal, no one accepts me. I guess that's why I live out here in the forest, alone and away from prying eyes. Well, maybe not totally alone...
It was one thing to be 'different', but it was something totally different to have that difference shouted out to the world.
My sister, that little bitch... She just had to tell our parents about my 'friend', didn't she? Oh, what I would do to see her...
He stopped that thought before it formed. He knew it wasn't fair to wish harm upon his sister, but he could still hate her. Hate her for all she had done to him.
She found out about him and his lover. And she told her friends, who told their friends, which ultimately came to his parents.
He punched the defenseless ground, holding back tears.
When father found out, everyone found out. He yelled himself hoarse until my mother came to back him up.
He put a clamp on those particular memories.
That was years ago... Not that four years is all that long, but it sure feels that way...
He sighed and hung his head.
Didn't they wonder about me when I was little? I know the other kids did. I always had a thing for reading and talking to the strange creatures that wandered into the town. I was drawn to power. And that power was my downfall, in a sense.
He crossed his arms over his knees, resting his head against them. He lifted his head a little when he felt a light weight land on his shoulder and a quiet chirp in his ear. He brought a hand up to scratch the chest of the colorful songbird, the herald of his lover. The bird quietly chirruped in his ear, leaning into the scratching.
At least I have someone that cares about me, even if I don't show that I care for him. I'm just afraid, really. Yeah, I live with him, but... I'm afraid to show any feelings. I was so hurt as a child. One doesn't easily forget abuse to one's mind and body.
The rainbow colored bird looked up at the path that lead to the small, two-story house. It fluffed up its feathers when it saw someone coming from that direction. Another man, no older than thirty, but no longer than the younger man of twenty, walked towards the pond. His eyes held concern and a little bit of sadness.
The younger man doesn't look up, instead looking towards the trees on the opposite side of the pond. He doesn't want to face his partner, the person who found him and healed his bloody arms.
"Will you be coming back to the house, or are you going to brood more, Indy?" The man's tone sounded light, but he was concerned for Indigo, 'Indy' for short.
Indy brushed a strand of long black hair behind his ear and turned his eyes to a spot between his feet, still trying not to look at his lover.
"You want me to go back? After all I said to you? After all I did?"
The man smiled, kneeling next to Indy. "Of course I want you to come back. I know you didn't mean what you said to me."
Indy closed his eyes, fighting back tears. "How can you still stand by me? I've been nothing but trouble for you..."
"Not as much trouble as I have been for you."
The man placed two fingers under Indy's chin, tilting the younger man's face up. "You finally opened up to me, I have all the reasons in the world to want you back. I can and will help you. What your sister and your parents did to you is in the past. Nothing can touch you here. Nothing and no one can hurt you anymore."
The songbird fluttered to sit on a low tree branch as the older man wrapped his arms around Indy. Indy started in surprise and looked sideways at the man.
"I will protect you, Indy."
Indy looked back down at the ground.
I did open to him, didn't I? I told him how I was bullied and abused by other people and my parents. I told him I loved him. I tried to kill myself to save him from people that may seek me out, yet he still stands by me. I've never heard of a demon doing such a thing...
The man pulled Indy closer and wrapped his iridescent red-feathered wings around him. Indy looked up into the older man's face, looking into his cat-like blue eyes.
"I... I'm sorry I tried to kill myselfEIt was a stupid thing to do and I regret it now."
The beautiful demon tilted his head to the side and smiled, his waist length white hair falling over his shoulder.
"That's more like it!" He kissed Indy lightly on the lips as the bird twittered at them from its perch in the near-by tree.
He pulled Indy to his feet and held him against his body. "I think we have some things to deal with in that spirit of yours."
Indy smiled, for the first time in two years, and nodded.
Everyone said that demons are blood-thirsty bastards that eat humans for every meal. Well, that may be true for some, but not him... He takes care of me better than some humans could. He smiled to himself as he followed the demon back to their home, the songbird flitting after them. He loves me and I love him. I guess my life isn't such a waste after all. I guess even an abused, 'different', human can find a heaven in a hell.
