Confessions Over Sweet Snow

One-shot

Warnings: Yaoi and slight angst.

A pair of demons fought side by side. Their attacks intertwined and wound around the other. One had the other’s back at all times. Their moves were synchronous. In moments the seemingly choreographed assault had their opponents dead.

“Not bad, Kurama,” Hiei told the tall redheaded human. Kurama smiled at the fire demon.

“That was good. It would have been more fun if the opponents had been a challenge, but you have to take what you can get. I haven’t had a real fight since the Dark Tournament. What about you?” Kurama asked. Hiei looked up with blood-red eyes glittering in the setting sun.

“Nobody is a challenge anymore. I hate it,” Hiei told him.

“Not much you can do about that. Shall we head back to Ningenkai?” the fox in masquerade asked.

            “Hn,” was Hiei’s response.

“I guess you don’t want the sweet snow I bought for you,” Kurama said as he began walking to the portal.

“Fox, where do you think you are going?”

            “Home, why, Hiei?”

             “You left me.”

“I’m sorry, Hiei. I thought you didn’t want to come.” The unlikely pair walked towards the entry to Ningenkai.

“Give me the sweet snow, Kurama,” Hiei said, his eager tones readily apparent.

“Give me a second, Hiei. I have to serve it first,” the fox said as he spooned the frozen sugary milk into bowls. The impatient fire demon began to tap his feet on the floor to pass time. Within seconds he was greedily devouring a bowl brimming with ice cream.

“Aha!” Kurama exclaimed. Hiei looked up from his feasting to look at the kitsune.

“Hm?” Hiei asked. Kurama smiled deviously at the now slightly nervous fire demon. Hiei raised a quizzical eyebrow and crimson eyes were alight with confusion.

“I have just found the great Hiei’s single weak point!” Kurama said.

“Wha…what?!” Hiei asked, his tone bamboozled sounding.

“Your weak point is sweet snow, Hiei. Your one besides Yukina,” Kurama said. ‘No, I have another one, fox. And I’m looking at it,’ Hiei thought. Kurama looked at him perplexed when Hiei didn’t answer immediately.

“Hiei?” Kurama asked softly, his tone mellow and velvety. Hiei looked at the kitsune and found himself lost in the fox’s forest eyes that spoke volumes of history. They were usually carefully guarded.

“Fox, you shouldn’t let others see into your soul like that. You need to guard your eyes.”

“I’m sorry. I just feel so comfortable around you. I didn’t think I had to guard my soul around you.”

“I…I…I…”Hiei stuttered. ‘Is it just me, or is that fox getting closer to me?’ A door slamming cut off his train of thought. Kurama immediately straightened back in his chair just as his mother came bounding into the kitchen.

“Hello, Shuiichi. Oh, you have Hiei over to visit? I’ll just get out of your way. I have to leave for my date soon anyway,” Shiori quickly said as she walked out of the room.

“What were you doing just before your mother walked in, Kurama?” Hiei asked, demanding an answer. Kurama began to blush slightly.

            “I don’t remember.”

“Of course you do, fox. Now tell me.”

“I…I…I…” Kurama began. He stood and turned away from Hiei.

“Tell me. I won’t laugh,” Hiei said. To his surprise the fox turned and smiled at him.

“I can show you, Hiei,” the fox said slyly. Hiei paled several shades. He had heard that tone before. It usually meant something big was about to happen.  The fox began to advance on Hiei.

            “Kurama, what are you doing?!”

“I said I would show you what I was about to do.”

“Uh…” Kurama was now kneeling in front of Hiei, his head resting on the fire demon’s knees. The lithe fingers wound around the armrests and pulled the fox up. He was now leaning on Hiei’s legs and was eye level with the confused fire demon.

“Fox, what’s going on?” Hiei asked. Kurama’s face was mere inches from Hiei’s. The fire demon could feel Kurama’s red hair tickling his bare arms; feel his warm breath on his face. The gap closed and Hiei could feel Kurama’s lips pressing on to his own. A moment later and the kiss ended as the fox abruptly stood.

“I’m sorry, Hiei. I’m so sorry,” the fox apologized.

“Why are you sorry, fox?” Hiei asked, his tone laden with concern for his friend.

            “I shouldn’t have done that.”

            “Why not?”

“I forced myself on you. I know you don’t want me.”

“I didn’t push you away, so how do you know?”

“You were too shocked to think of pushing me away.” Hiei stood and wrapped his arms around the kitsune’s waist.

“Maybe I didn’t want to push you away, fox,” Hiei said softly. Kurama looked at Hiei and dropped to his knees to embrace the other.

“Really?” Kurama asked, his voice heavy with emotion.

            “Really,” Hiei confirmed.

“Is this real, Hiei? Am I just dreaming?” Kurama asked.

            “Yes, this is real, fox.”

“Hiei, may I tell you something?”

            “Yes.”

“Hiei, every word I am about to say is completely true.”

“I know, fox. I know you wouldn’t lie to me.”

“Hiei, I will understand if you hate me and never want to see me again.”

“I could never hate you, fox.”

            “Hiei, I…I…I…”

            “Spit it out, fox”

“Hiei, I love you.” Hiei didn’t know what to think until the full impact of Kurama’s words sunk in. He hadn’t noticed the fox had taken his silence the wrong way and wormed out of his embrace. Kurama was sitting in the corner, his back to Hiei and his arms wrapped around himself. Hiei crawled over the where the fox sat and watched the silent tears fall. A tentative hand touched the fox on the shoulder. Kurama leaned into the touch. The fire demon wrapped both his arms around the redhead and held him in a loving embrace.

“I love you, too fox. I love you, too.”
