Selene -- From Greek Mythology
Mythology: The moon goddess Selene is best known for her countless love affairs. The most famous one is with the sheperd Endymion. Selene resembles a young woman with a white face, like the surface of the moon, and a half moon on her forhead. Selene wears robes and carries a torch. She
travels on a silver chariot drawn by two horses. She is often shown riding a horse or bull as well. She may not be one of the twelve Olympiads, but she is still the moon goddess. Artemis is accosicated with the moon, since one of her signs is the cresent, but she is not the moon goddess. Selene has a brother
Helios, the sun god, and a sister Eos, the goddess of the dawn. After Helios completes his journey across the sky on his chariot, Selene begins hers. Before she begins her journey across the night sky, she bathes in the sea. The seduction of Endymion is the love affair that brings Selene the most fame. She fell in love with the sheperd Endymion and seduced him while he lie sleeping in a cave. This resulted in the birth of fifty daughters, each one said to represent a phase of the moon. Selene was so deeply in love with Endymion that she asked Zeus to grant him eternal life so that she might be able to embrace him forever. Zeus agreed and put Endymion into an eternal sleep. Selene visited Endymion every night and kissed him with
her rays of light. Selene is a favorite of many poets, especially love poets. It is said that Selene's moon rays fall upon sleeping mortals, and her kisses fall upon her love, Endymion.
How this relates to Sailormoon: The princess of the Moon, Selenity, or Serenity was in love with the prince of the eath, Endymion, in Sailormoon. Her reincarnation, Tsukino Usagi, is a pun. Tsuki no Usagi litterally translates to 'Bunny on the Moon'. The Japanese believe there is a Rabbit on the Moon rather than a Man on the Moon.
