Chapter One

Elektra looked up at the full moon, a month ago, she would have sat out on the porch and let her skin bathe in the moonlight, trying to sense Lun Selene’s presence, but now, she drew her shades as to hide from the pure white light. She lay back down on her bed and pushed her head into her pillow, leaving a large dent. Shane walked over and sat next to her, taking her hand as if trying to calm her.
A long while passed where there was silence, and neither of them spoke. But then, Shane’s worries took over him, "You feeling any better?" he said, a look of guilt spread across his face.
"No," she replied, "How am I supposed to feel better Shane? Was I supposed to feel better after I found out you were planning on breaking up with me today, of all days, on my birthday?"
He rolled his eyes, "Let’s not get into this again," he said.
"No, Let’s! It’d be a very exciting conversation I promise you, and I won’t throw up this time either. Heck, while I’m at it I might as well dig a six foot hole, I’ll be needing it eventually!"
Shane didn’t try to hide his annoyance, "Will you save the sarcasm for another time?" He didn’t pull away his gaze, and she yanked her hand away from him.
"Shane, how many times do I have to tell you that Billy is just my friend?" Shane took a moment to reply, "As many times as you f…"
Elektra slapped his hand "Would you mind NOT swearing for once, I don’t want Rachel to hear you again."
Shane continued, disregarding her complaint, "You can tell me you and him are ‘just friends’ as many times as you want. But I’m not gonna stick around and listen."
There was a knock and a very drunken version of Elektra’s sister Rachel stumbled in, "EW! What the heck are you two doing in here?" Elektra saw Shane mumble something under his breath.
"Elle, do you know where my room is?" Rachel asked, putting her hand against a wall to steady herself.
"Oh my hat! What did you get your hands on this time?" Elektra got up from her bed and grabbed Rachel’s arm, taking her to her room. When she had Rachel tucked in for the night, Elektra walked out of the room and popped the lock into place. She would just let Rachel out after Shane left.
Elektra silently walked back to her room and continued the conversation as if she had never left. "Shane, I was faithful to you for 2 years and guess what, I was friends with Billy that whole time. You never seemed to care until NOW, and that’s probably what’s making me angry, if you’re going to freak out on me when my friend shows up at my house, then how could you ignore it before. It if made you that nervous, if you had brought it up before we could have solved this 2 years ago!"
Shane’s eyes still kept a steady look but he was deep in thought, "Elektra, I didn’t bring it up before now cause I didn’t want to get lied to, so now that you’ve managed to force another lie out, I have more reason to leave."
She could feel the lump in her throat cutting off her breathing, no, not now…please…not another panic… She never finished her thought, she fell to her knees, being unable to get up made her panic worse, her panic attacks had always caused her problems, but they had never really been this bad. The fact that her panic attacks blacked other vision was making anger boil up in her. Elektra felt someone pick her up, "Shane?" she whispered.
"You’ll be okay." He whispered to her as he set her down on her bed. Shane pulled the covers up over her and kissed her cheek, for the last time. Elektra heard him grab his coat, she whimpered, he was leaving, he hadn’t just been mad. She whimpered again when she heard her door slam, her vision cleared as her tears began to fall.

Chapter Two

Banging her head against her door wasn’t helping Rachel much, "Elle! Get your butt out here and let me out!" She heard the soft patting of footsteps against the floor and heard the lock on the outside of her door pop out, "Thank you." She said, then, as she opened the door, she saw her sister running back to her room, "Ella?" a sudden slam told Rachel that her sister was back in her room. Rachel walked down the stairs slowly, she took 2 glasses out of the cabinet and filled them with water, she got Tylenol for herself some for Elektra.
Elektra sat on her bed, her tears leaving a little puddle just under her eyes. She wiped them away with her hand.
"Elle, Come on, Let me in! You’re scaring me!" Rachel picked the lock and walked in, a glass of water and Tylenol in hand.
"Do I need to get a master lock to keep you out?" Elektra snapped. Rachel sat down next to her sister and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, but right away she knew she had to call Billy. "I have to go to my art classes today, and I don’t think you’re up to going with me, since dad is out of town and I can’t think of who else to call, looks like you’re stuck with Billy."
Elektra looked up at her sister, her glare was steady, "Rachel, I." She decided not to fight it and shook her head, blowing off what she had begun to say. Rachel grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around Elektra before leaving the room. She walked slowly down the stairs; skipping the last one she jumped and grabbed the phone from its hook on the wall.
Her fingers quickly punched in Billy’s number, "Hello?" it was his mom, "Hi Mrs. Martin, its Rachel Carson, is Billy there?" Rachel heard Billy’s mom talking to someone in the background.
"Hey Rach, what’s up?" Billy’s voice said. He sounded groggy, like he had just woken up.
"Hey Billy, listen can you come over and keep Elektra company while I go to my art classes?"
He thought for a moment, "Yeah, but, umm, could you tell me what’s wrong?" Rachel didn’t think she deserved to have this huge lump in her throat that was cutting off her breathing, but then again, she was leaving her sister at home for 3 hours when she was going to something she could skip out on. "Shane broke up with her last night." Rachel said, her simplicity burning through her head, if she told him the rest, he would get angry.
"Are you trying to tell me that he broke up with Elektra on her birthday?" Billy said the only thing he could think to say in reply.
"Yes."
Anger rose in Billy’s voice, "I told her he would do this to her." Rachel rolled her eyes, "Listen can you keep her company or what? I have 10 minutes ‘till my class starts."
There was no silence, "Yeah, I’ll be right there." He hung up the phone before she could say anything. She waited 5 minutes and heard the doorbell ring, she ran to the door grabbed her coat, purse and keys and ran out the door.
"She’s in her room." she screamed to Billy over her shoulder. Billy nodded and walked into the house, closing the door behind him.
Billy walked slowly into Elektra’s room and looked at her bed, she was asleep, wrapped in a Hello Kitty blanket that matched her charm bracelet; the one Billy had given her for her 13th birthday. But she was no longer 13. Elektra had turned 16 yesterday; she was no longer the happy girl he used to know. That had all changed when her mother died of cancer 2 years ago, Rachel had started smoking after that, then came her drinking problems. Elektra always had to deal with the family breakdowns, it had taken a hard toll on her over the past year, when Rachel was in and out of rehab 6 times and jail 7. The brightness in her eyes had faded after her mother’s death, and no matter how hard Billy tried, he couldn’t find a way to make things right for her. He had never told her, but half of the times Rachel ended up in rehab; Billy had called some place or another, concerned for Elektra’s sanity. About a month before her mother died, Elektra had started going out with Shane, her mother hadn’t approved, neither had Billy, something about Shane gave him the creeps. He figured that because she hadn’t listened to her mother then, she was blaming herself for not listening now. Elektra stirred and pulled her pillow over her head. Billy realized her curtains were opened, and her window was broken. "Elektra, why is your window broken?" he said.
She turned her head; obviously surprised he was in the room and then thought a moment. “Someone threw this in after Rachel left." She held up a small locket.
Billy looked at it for a moment and then sat down next to her on the bed.
He turned it over and read the small gold engravings, "Didn’t Shane give this to you yesterday?" he asked
"Yeah" Elektra held up a large rock that was thrown at her window before the locket came flying through.
"Rachel was wearing it." Billy said, his memory kicking in and seeing the little gold locket clearly. They both froze and wondered what the connection was, afraid that, maybe, Rachel and Shane had been seeing each other, and this was jealousy.
