Kiwanis International's 87th Anniversary

PHILIPPINE LUZON DISTRICT

Presidential Proclamation No.124 issued on January 13, 1993, declared the third week of January as "PHILIPPINES KIWANIS WEEK". The proclamation seeks to perpetuate the association's prochild and civil society goals.  Established 87 years ago, Kiwanis International (KI) has grown into 13,000 clubs with more than 600,000 members in 97 countries worldwide.

Kiwanis International is distinguished by its aims: "To perform civic action beyond the capacity of the individual, focusing on a community's unmet needs, those that public authorities are not prepared or able to address, alleviate problems and difficulties during times of calamities and national crisis."

To Kiwanis International members, the children of the world are their constant concern.  The various projects KI worldwide focus on children.  In 1990, it launched "Young Children Priority One" which focused on the various needs of children from prenatal to age five, especially their safety, health, nutrition, childcare, etc.

In 1993, it launched "Worldwide Service Project" aimed at helping eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), a leading cause of preventable mental and physical retardation..  Through its efforts, Kiwanis (Philippines) helped pass Republic Act No. 8172, known as the ASIN Law (An Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide).

In 2001, it signed memorandum of agreement with the Philippine National Police launching a "National Campaign Against Prohibited Drugs." Kiwanis International has thus become "a global network of helping hands."

Just recently, a memorandum of agreement was signed with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) initiating the participation of civic clubs in the Gubat ng Mamamayan - Highway Trees Adoption (GMA-HTA) Program through its own version of KAGUBATAN NG KIWANIS PARA SA KAUNLARAN. Project Initiators KCC President Abet Macalintal and KCC PP & Hixson Fellow John Raña with PDG Ivan Velez and Lt.Gov. Rod Beldad witnessed the signing. Launching ceremonies was held on January 24, 2002 at Sampaloc Lake, San Pablo City. DENR officials, LGU officials, and Kiwanis district officers and club presidents of the 14 Kiwanis Clubs of Laguna did the symbolic tree planting for all the clubs of the Kiwanis Philippine Luzon District.
