Labour Day Project

Children's Ward, Spanish Town Hospital

DP Roosevelt Gillett-Chambers

Kiwanians rallied to the Children's Ward of the Spanish Town Hospital on Labour Day, May 23, 2006.  The objective was to replace the fine mesh around the ward's several windows that acts as a barrier to protect the children against insects and other pests.  Over the years, the elements and normal wear and tear destroyed the mesh thus allowing mosquitoes, lizards, moths, flies, etc to enter the ward to the discomfort and general threat to the hygiene of these patients.

Thirteen (13) members of the Kiwanis Club of Spanish Town made this a worthwhile project, ably assisted by six Key Clubbers from St. Jago High and St. Catherine High Schools, and four contracted labourers.  The project commenced at 9:00 a.m. and after some 184 service hours the 47 patients were able to leave their windows open to enjoy the cool tropical breeze without the accompanying pests.

President Abdon Campbell commented afterwards that the project was part of the club's commitment to the Spanish Town community in general and the children in particular.  He emphasized that a child's quality of life influences that child's perception as an adult.  Consequently, Kiwanis worldwide was committed to improving the quality of children's lives from pre-natal through age five.  "As Kiwanians, we feel compelled to assist where possible, either pro-actively or by invitation, to prepare our youngsters to take on the mantle of leadership.  Our assistance may be in any form or shape, from mentoring to them, facilitating educational opportunities, providing food through our school feeding program, shelter, or by simple acts as this Labour Day project.  Let me especially thank our Key Clubbers present who, by their actions today, have demonstrated their continued commitment to improving the well being of others."
