Feral animals of New Zealand

There are two main feral animals hunted in New Zealand
The Wild Goat & The Pig
Both common throughout New Zealand
Both cause alot of damage to the environment

Wild Goat - Capra hircus

There are two types of goat in New Zealand,
The European Domestic Goat,
&
The Angora
The European was realeasd by Captain James Cook in 1769 as food for saliors as the colonies expanded.
The angora was imported to be grown for it's mohair in the 1860's although these goats have been farmed in a boom & bust farming situation they have acclimatised well.
Every bust more goats were released into the wild.
The Angora has a larger horn growth than it's counter-part the European.
The meat from goat is a great low fat meat to eat but not many people do.
Most farmers & the Department of Conversation find goats to be pest eating sapling tree's and compete with livestock for precious grass.
Goats will live almost anywhere and eat almost anything making New Zealand the ultimate place to live having no natural preditors.
large number can be found in most rural area's
In some places you need to keep them out of your garden they come that close into the towns.
For a new or young hunter goats make great practice for hunting larger animals,
The goats aren't hard to find or to stalk allowing one to sharpen there abilites whilst helping out a local farmer.
For those after that first trophy,
Don't be fooled those goat heads aren't that easy when your after the big one !!
Or how did it get that big ??
