"Fil-kummerċ ġust, il-ħaddiema fil-pajjiżi l-fqar jieħdu ħlas ġust ta’ xogħolhom. Biex dan il-ħlas ikun “ġust” irid jipprovdi biżżejjed flus biex il-ħaddiema u l-familji tagħhom ikunu jistgħu jtejbu l-kwalitŕ tal-ħajja tagħhom u ta’ wliedhom billi, ngħidu aħna, jgħixu f’ambjent mhux imniġġes, ikollhom aċċess għal kura medika tajba, u jibagħtu t-tfal tagħhom l-iskola."

Il-Kummerċ Ġust

fil-Lokalita Tieghek

Fil-kummerċ dinji, l-inġustizzji qegħdin jikbru, u l-ġid ikompli jitqassam ħażin. Il-maġġoranza tan-nies tad-dinja huma fqar għax jaħdmu kemm jaħdmu, qatt ma jistgħu joħorġu lilhom infushom u lill-familji tagħhom mill-morsa tal-faqar.

Fl-1960 l-iktar nies sinjuri tad-dinja kienu qed jaqilgħu 30 darba iżjed mill-iktar nies fqar. Fl-1998, bħala medja, is-sinjuri tad-dinja kienu qegħdin jaqilgħu 78 darba iżjed mill-fqar.

Waħda mill-iktar risposti effettivi għal dawn l-inġustizzji istituzzjonalizzati hija l-kummerċ ġust. Dan it-tip ta’ kummerċ ilu jeżisti tnejn u tletin sena u llum hawn mat-3000 ħanut ta’ kummerċ ġust (“ħanut dinji”). F’Malta l-uniku ħanut tal-kummerċ ġust huwa L-Arka ta’ 306, Triq San Pawl, il-Belt, ħanut immexxi minn koperattiva ta’ voluntiera li ma jiħdux sold mill-qligħ li jagħmel il-ħanut għax il-flus jerġgħu jinvestuhom f’inizjattivi ta’ kummerċ li ma jħallix il-qligħ jiġu qabel il-bnedmin u l-ambjent.

Fost il-prodotti ta’ L-Arka hemm ħafna xogħol ta’ l-artiġjanat, ngħidu aħna xogħol ta’ l-irħam, tal-fuħħar, tad-drapp u tal-qasab, kif ukoll bosta prodotti ta’ l-ikel, strumenti mużikali etniċi, cds ta’ mużika “dinjija”, u ħafna prodotti etniċi oħra ta’ kwalitŕ.

Fil-kummerċ ġust, il-ħaddiema fil-pajjiżi l-fqar jieħdu ħlas ġust ta’ xogħolhom. Biex dan il-ħlas ikun “ġust” irid jipprovdi biżżejjed flus biex il-ħaddiema u l-familji tagħhom ikunu jistgħu jtejbu l-kwalitŕ tal-ħajja tagħhom u ta’ wliedhom billi, ngħidu aħna, jgħixu f’ambjent mhux imniġġes, ikollhom aċċess għal kura medika tajba, u jibagħtu t-tfal tagħhom l-iskola.

Il-voluntiera tal-ħanut L-Arka se jkunu qed ibigħu dawn il-prodotti ġusti nhar is-Sibt u l-Ħadd li ġej fil-ħinijiet tal-quddies. Jekk trid prodott ta’ kwalitŕ (u temmen fil-ġustizzja), din l-opportunitŕ titlifhiex.

Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust tirringrazzja lill-Christian Life Community ta' l-appoġġ.

KKĠ Fair Trade at GAIA FEST, Għajntuffieħa

GAIAFEST 2005

3rd June to Tuesday 7th June

The Elysium Visitor Centre,

Ghajn Tuffieha 6.00 - 11.00pm

Price: 75c per person [multiple entry]

View programme at www.projectgaia.org

Gaia Fondation: Tel: 2158 4474 - admin@projectgaia.org

Torch-lit footpaths will lead to stalls selling organic food using Gaia's own produce, natural health products and services and fair-trade goods. An area will be set aside for meditation and live dance and music sessions will be held in Gaia's water reservoir which doubles up as an amphitheatre.

"The idea is for people to come for a stroll to a place where there is entertainment, information, education, food and live music, and soak up the general experience," said Rudolph Ragonesi, the driving force behind the Gaia Foundation. "Hence the word 'festival' as opposed to the concept of a fair which tends to be more exhibition oriented."

Besides the outdoor activities, practical demonstrations, seminars, informal discussions and talks are planned in the centre's conference hall which seats up to 70 persons. The topics will cover diverse themes such as complementary therapies, creativity, psychotherapy, ecology, philanthropy, nutrition and diet, feng-shui, martial arts, animal welfare, the environment and respect for life. There will be workshops on massage, yoga, the benefits of using solar energy, bio-diesel and more. The foundation is working on having "as much of a variety as possible" and the plan is for this festival to become an annual fixture.

KKĠ Sri Lanka Tsunami Project Proposal Approved

A project proposed by Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust is one of the seven projects selected by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, in conjunction with the Ministerial Advisory Committee, to benefit from the Tsunami Relief Fund. After issuing a call for Expressions of Interest last February, the ministry received a total of 14 project proposals for evaluation. The seven projects were chosen following a selection process of long-term humanitarian and/or development assistance projects in Sri Lanka.

The KKĠ project aims to set up income generation projects focused on the fishermen and their families to empower them to be less dependent until such time their livelihoods is restored.

The interim income generation projects are fabrication of fibre glass canoes, manufacture of cement building blocks, spinning of coconut fibre twines and construction of houses for re-settlement. The total value of the KKĠ project is Lm31,952.

The Tsunami Relief Fund, consisting of funds collected through L-Istrina, is administered by the Ministerial Advisory Committee in such a way to provide maximum benefit for the victims of the tsunami, in collaboration with the governments of the affected countries and according to Malta Government Financial Regulations. These projects will continue to be monitored throughout the period of implementation. (See article on The Malta Independent)

 A Partnership that Pays

One of the aims of Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust is to make more people aware of the fascinating world of fair trade and its ability to change the lives of disadvantaged workers in the poor countries of the world. Fair trade gives people the real possibility of working their way out of poverty.

Being a member of Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust will allow you to invest your money in an initiative that is already bringing many social benefits to people in Third World countries who earn a fair wage for their fairly traded goods.

As a member you will be joining a growing number of Maltese citizens who are helping workers in poor and unfavourable conditions make a respectable living and improve the educational, sanitary and social structure they live in. Your investment will allow us to meet our next targets, which include:

  • Increase tenfold the current market share of fair trade coffee within 3 years

  • Set up fair trade educational projects in 10 local secondary schools within 3 years

  • Relocate site of shop to a more central position within 8 years

In order to attain these targets and maintain the constant educational programmes promoting the benefits of fair trade Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust has invested in the work of its first two part-timers. We believe in fair trade and we believe in what we do. So can you.
