예이츠(W. B. Yeats)의 시 '이니스프리 호도(The Lake Isle of Innisfree)'를 아시는 분이 많으리라 믿습니다.  말 그대로 이니스프리란 이름의, 호수 가운데 섬이죠.  그런데 알고 보면 innis란 말 뜻이 섬입니다.  그러니까 프리(free)섬이 되나요?  이 볼품없는 작은 섬이 아일랜드 서북부 슬라이고(Sligo) 주 럭길(Lough Gill: 역시 길 호수가 맞겠죠?) 연안에 있습니다.  같은 식으로 Shankil(벨파스트Belfast 시)은 오래된 교회(shan오래된 + kil교회)가 되고 Glendalough(위클로우Wicklow 주)하면 골짜기와 호수가 함께 한(glen골짜기 + da두 개 + lough호수) 풍경이 떠오릅니다. 

이렇게 된 이유는 많은 아일랜드 지명이 원 아일랜드어 발음을 따서 영어화되었기 때문입니다.  주민들은 영어로 소리를 적음으로써 원 지명을 보전하려고 노력했습니다.  비록 그 결과로 원지명의 아름다운 소리는 남았으나 그 말 뜻을 잃었습니다.  아래 목록이 완전하지는 않지만 보다 일반적인 아일랜드 지명의 예를 전해줍니다.
Many of the place names in Ireland are anglicised versions of the way the original Irish (Gaelic) name was spoken. The settlers tried to preserve the place names by writing them phonetically in English. Although this resulted in some beautiful sounding place names, it lost the meaning behind them.
