ESL Resources and Ideas
under construction
I teach in a district in which many of my students speak English as their second language. I have one class in my teaching schedule that is formally labeled ESL. Personally, I have found that incorporating games and artistic activities into my grammar and writing lessons has made teaching this population of students much easier. But nonetheless it has been a daunting task to teach them the basic language skills they need, so I am in the midst of compiling as many resources as possible. Here are a few:
Persuasive Writing
In Connecticut, persuasive writing is major cornerstone of our statewide standardized test, the CMT. From fourth grade on, students are taught to back up their ideas with convincing facts and opinions--writing letters to the parents or to the editors of newspapers, researching social issues, and suggesting community improvements, for example. I have posted here my own persuastive writing unit. Check it out.
