A look back at the years that shaped the KSU Cheer Program by Fee Mulkey.
1995-1996
Under direction of Head Coach Julia Reeves, 16 unlikely competitors make an appearance at the Peach Belt Competition. Finishing 4th and gaining the attention of the Athletic Director and Athletic Department.
1996-1997
Robert Arnold takes over as Head Coach.  Half of the team quits a month before Peach Belt. The “A” team attacks the PBC competition with 7 cheerleaders and wows the crowd with a slow motion dance AND pyramid…and ofcourse…the human guitar.  For all of the members of that team the Beastie Boys will forever be entrenched in our minds.
1997-1998
Felecia Ingle (Mulkey) joins Robert Arnold on the coaching staff. The team goes ‘all-girl’.  Two weeks after the spring try-out we only have 3 cheerleaders!  We beg the rest of the team on in the fall.  Of the 18 cheerleaders on the team, only 4 have cheered before…12th in the nation simply because they believe.
1998-1999
First year in Daytona for Nationals, 9th in the Nation.  About half of the team has cheered before…Of 18 people only 6 can do back handsprings.
1999-2000
Robert Arnold resigns from coaching staff.  Bobby Goff joins coaching staff.  KSU makes it to finals for the first time in a National Competition.  Shannan Cox blows her knee out right after preliminaries; the team spends the rest of the evening re-choreographing the entire routine.  They go on to compete in Finals the next day and finish 5th in the Nation.
2000-2001
Coaches are surprised when 30 people show up for try-outs. The talent level literally doubles this year.  The team finishes in the top 3 at Peach Belt.  The rest of the Peach Belt competition begins to worry about the little ‘all-girl’ team from Kennesaw.  In Daytona – the team is in 8th place after preliminaries because of an illegal stunt.  (Which became legal the next year)  They spend the afternoon in Ryan’s parking lot changing a pyramid sequence.  They make history the next day by jumping from 8th place to 2nd in the nation.  They celebrate like they won a National Championship!!!  They run over and have their picture made with the winners holding up the number 2!
2001-2002
Start the year with 22 – end with 12.  The year of the Dirty Dozen…”just 12 girls who beat GC”.  ‘Not competing’ is not an option to these 12 athletes.  They make history by beating Peach Belt powerhouse Georgia College who has 12 guys on the floor and 8 girls…Kennesaw has 12 girls.  A month later they stun their division at Nationals by placing 2nd with 12 people.  Again, they celebrate like they won a National Championship.
2002-2003
The talent level and the number of cheerleaders doubles this year.  The team travels to Columbus State for Peach Belt and took over! In zebra print, the Kennesaw State team takes the floor in the Lumpkin Center in Columbus and brings the entire crowd to its feet.  The ‘girls’ from KSU hammer the competition by 22 points to win it’s first ever Conference crown.  A valuable lesson is learned at Nationals when an over confident team lets it’s guard down momentarily during finals and finishes 2nd by only .04 points.  While disappointed, the KSU team takes it as a challenge and vows to keep the focus and finish strong the next year.
2003-2004
Again, the talent level doubles.  The focus is strong the entire year.  The team adopts the phrase “It’s not about you” which has 2 meanings. 1- it is not about the individual, it is about the team.  2 – It is not about Hawaii Pacific or University of Central Oklahoma, it is about KSU working hard, and performing to the best of their ability.  This carries them through the year and right into another Peach Belt Championship, edging out a strong Georgia College team. The KSU fans make their mark on the Peach Belt competition by showing up in true Kennesaw style.  The fans play a huge part in the second Peach Belt victory.  In Daytona, the team focused on alumni support and each other to not let the pressure of the ‘hunted’ team get to them. They found themselves in first place after prelims and decided to simply ‘believe’ on the second day.  Bringing home the 1st Cheer National Championship to Kennesaw State University.
2004-2005
KSU sets out to do what only one other team at KSU has done....win back to back National Titles.  Coach Scott Whitlock and the Women's Softball team did it in 1995 and 1996.  Everyone wished them well but had their doubts.  KSU cheer never doubted. Not even when they were edged out of the Peach Belt Conference Championship by Columbus State.  KSU kept their eyes on the goal....a second National Championship and to leave Div. II in style.  And they did just that in April.  Even with a few bobbles the team brought home the big trophy for the second straight year.  The difficulty alone won the championship that year.  Way to exit D-II!
2005-2006
First year in Division I.  The cheer team along with the rest of the athletic department, took on the motto 'New Division - Same Tradition'.  There were whispers about how the defending champions would hang in Div. I.  The cheer team watched the other sports fall short of their previous successes with the move into bigger opponents.  The cheer team maintained the focus with the motto 'It's not about you' they kept the focus on the team.  First year at Cheersport the team proved to themselves that they could do just about anything....2 weeks of 2-a-days!  KSU Cheer finished a strong second and caused some heads to turn.  The team came back with renewed focus and increased the difficulty in their routine and marched right into Division I at the National Championships. The goal was to make the top 5.  Not only did they make the top 5 they busted it wide open with a 3rd place finish in their division I debut.  The girls were disappointed only because they did not nail their routine.  The 3rd place finish is what this program needed to continue to grow.
