KENTUCKY CHRISTMAS

A Kentucky Christmas is the best
we celebrate the entire week,
family comes from far and near
and search for a place to sleep.

The children are bedded down on the floor
we hardly have room to walk,
there is always someone up in the night
if you can't sleep and just need to talk.

We have a special place in the kitchen
to share a secret or to tell a joke,
It's also the place to find a snack
or a place to have a smoke.

We start early on Christmas Eve
with food like biscuits and country ham,
eggnog mixed with a little rum
and a cake made with blackberry jam.

Our grandson makes this night very special
as he plays for us Christmas songs,
the little ones have a hard time sitting still
so we don't make them wait for long.

Soon it's time to open the presents
the paper will be almost knee deep,
the sounds of many toys roar in the night
and the children are hard to get to sleep.

But we manage to get them all bedded down
with promises of a visit from Old Saint Nick,
another Kentucky Christmas is upon us
and we pray the falling snow will stick.
