"The Cool Chicks" was created in 1995, on a whim, by myself (immortalized as Queenie, the brunette in the picture above) and Andrea (immortalized as Spaz, the blond chick). Although you most likely have not seen the original (and probably never will), I did some very rough (and not-very-good) drawings for it, cheered on by Andrea and our friend, Megan (immortalized as the redheaded Empress). Since then Andrea and I continued to write Cool Chicks stories, and produce Cool Chicks artwork, though I have done the bulk of that. There are currently two versions, mine and Andrea's.
The brief descriptions/ character sketches (not to mention the artwork) on this site are, obviously, mine. I was not happy with the simple, flat story that the original version of "Cool Chicks" was. This page reflects the various changes I made to the original. I wanted to give it some bite. I wanted to move away from "I'm bored" (the basic plot element of the original-- someone would be bored and they'd all set off on an adventure--and would end with someone, usually Spaz, saying "I'm bored"). On top of that, we had borrowed some existing characters (most notably Batman and Alfred), and I was a bit uncomfortable with that from the start, with copyright laws and whatnot. I originally remedied the situation by killing Bruce Wayne off, and having Alfred leave. In this newer version they simply do not appear. Originally, Jack's character was named Chris Grays and I had based him on Robin of Batman Forever. In my new version he is a character in his own right, completely my own creation. I retained some of the elements of the original that I felt worked (Spaz's violent nature, for example), but got rid of those I felt were dead-ends, someone else's work, or generally inhibiting (the constant boredom of the characters).
Unfortunately, times change, and people along with them. As I update this page for the last time today, June 27, 2004, I feel I should announce that I will no longer work on Cool Chicks. I simply can't turn it into what I want it to be, not without completely taking over the story, and since it began as a collaborative effort, and any work done on it in the past two years hasn't been mine, I wouldn't feel right doing that. I have other projects I can put my whole heart into, and so I leave Cool Chicks in its other creator's hands. I hope it fares well there.
I will leave these pages up for posterity, however. |
