The Scarlet
Pimpernel
Set during the French Revolution, a period of
terror and distrust, The Scarlet Pimpernel introduces us to
Marguerite Blakeney, Europe's most beautiful woman, married to England's
richest fop, Sir Percy Blakeney. Chauvelin, a spy obsessed with one
cause, capturing the Scarlet Pimpernel, a hero to the condemned aristocrats
all around France, pleads with Marguerite, formerly a French actress, to
help her homeland and spy for him. She refuses, knowing it would
be immoral to condemn such a brave man to such a cruel death. Chauvelin
finds a scrap of paper indicating that her brother, Armand Armand, the
only person Marguerite still loves, is in league with the Scarlet Pimpernel.
With this evidence, he blackmails Marguerite: she must either send a brave,
honest, daring man to a cruel death, or condemn her brother, her own flesh
and blood, to be guillotined. Her choice sets off a strange domino
effect which changes her life forever.
