Eventually I hope to have pictures of the flowers and animals who
grace me with their presence in my garden! I'd like to tell you a
little about the history, flowers, and traditions of the 19th
century Victorian gardens.
The Horticulturist's Catalogs
The catalog
industry at the begining of the 19th century was little more than
one sheet of paper with a printed listing of floral seeds. The
owner's of the catalog usually lived just outside the cities. By
the end of the century, printing techniques had vastly improved
and the manufacturers plants expanded greatly. Usually the big
companies such as Vick's employed 50 people just to weigh,
measure, and dispense its seeds. Using lithographs, or glossy,
brightly colored chromolithographs the Victorian Horticulturists
were making elaborate "pamphlets" almost 200 colorful
pages and turned out more than 10,000 a day!
