Eventually I hope to have pictures of the flowers and animals who grace me with their presence in my garden! I'd like to tell you a little about the history, flowers, and traditions of the 19th century Victorian gardens.

The Horticulturist's Catalogs

The catalog industry at the begining of the 19th century was little more than one sheet of paper with a printed listing of floral seeds. The owner's of the catalog usually lived just outside the cities. By the end of the century, printing techniques had vastly improved and the manufacturers plants expanded greatly. Usually the big companies such as Vick's employed 50 people just to weigh, measure, and dispense its seeds. Using lithographs, or glossy, brightly colored chromolithographs the Victorian Horticulturists were making elaborate "pamphlets" almost 200 colorful pages and turned out more than 10,000 a day!
