RECAP

_________________________________________________________________________________

PIGEON – KIM KUHTEUBL - RECAP

“When you’re 30, you can be wise and horny all at the same time.”  That was the premise for Kim Kuhteubl’s hilarious one-woman show.  Especially if you’ve worked in the field of law at all.  Kim nails her portrayal of being a paranoid, neurotic, frustrated yet delightful young “administrative entrepreneur” soon to hit the 30-year mark.  She declares defiantly that she “is not a temp!” during her depiction of working as a freelance secretary for a major law firm.  Dee Dee (Kim’s character) also has to deal with the invasion of pigeons on her balcony.  All this combined makes for an evening of full out guffaws!

Pigeon has been invited to the New York International Fringe Festival for its American Premier.  The show has also been chosen by radio station "On Broadway XM28" as one of their "Top 10 Fringe Picks"!  The raising of funds for this expensive and exciting opportunity was the reason why Kim Kuhteubl, the show’s writer/performer and Toronto producer, who wrote PIGEON as a 30th birthday present to herself, had these sneak peeks this past week.  Good luck in New York Kim!  I will be keeping you posted on the whereabouts of any future Toronto performances.  This is a MUST SEE!

VAREKAI HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 3, 2002!

Great news!!
Varekai  has been extended in Toronto – it’s the latest live creation from Cirque du Soleil, explores an extraordinary world deep within a forest.  I think that every person breathing on this planet should experience the magic of Varekai.  Whatever it takes to go and see this show while it’s in town, DO IT!  The incredible athletic performances, symphony of sounds and divine humour will move you.  It left me speechless – there’s no adjective to describe it anyway.  An incredible, first-class, no-stone-unturned show.  Take your kids, bring a date, go solo!  It just doesn’t matter – just see it.  You will be afraid to blink in fear of missing one spectacular performance!   The word "varekai", meaning "wherever", originates from Romany, the language of Gypsies. DJs Jr-Flow, DJ Brace, DJ Disoriental, DJ Dopey, DJ Flx-Finghaz, DJ Tasc, Device, Double K, Exacto and Skratch Bastid came from all across the country to battle for the right to represent Canada at the 2002 Technics World DJ Championship.  The panel of expert judges was comprised of Excess, Toadstyle, P-Plus, Taktiks, FisherNice and D-Styles of the Beat Junkies. Competitors were allotted 6 minutes to showcase their skills, tricks, breakbeats, mixes, ability to entertain and originality.  After amazing sets from each of the DJs, Toronto’s own DJ Dopey unseated 2001’s Defending Champion Jr-Flow. WHO WANTS TO SEE THE BEST OF HEAVY D? The best of the Heavster.

Excerpt from www.eurweb.com

If Heavy D (aka Dwight Myers) is your man, then you will be happy to know that MCA an' 'nem are bringing out a compilation that features the Heavster's hits when he was still expanding across radio land.  "The Best Of Heavy D & The Boyz" edition of "20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection" brings together 11 of their biggest hits, each digitally remastered. Featured are four Top 10 R&B smashes, including the gold "Now That We Found Love" (with Aaron Hall).  As the first artist signed to the groundbreaking Uptown Records imprint, Heav dropped a ton of hits like "The Overweight Lover's In The House," (Which many a middle school child changed the lyrics to "Ya overweight mother ate my house..." Aaah, the 80s.) "Chunky But Funky" (here in a remix) and "Don't You Know" (No. 12 R&B), with Al B. Sure! on added vocals.  1989 followed with the platinum breakthrough "Big Tyme" and its Top 10 R&B smash, "We Got Our Own Thang," which was the JIIIZAM!

ME'SHELL NDEGEOCELLO: One Tough "Cookie"

Excerpt from www.eurweb.com

F'get neo-soul. Yeah, that's right. We said it. And while you're at it, f'get all those other music categories. Music maestro Me'Shell Ndegeocello is proclaiming a new way to look at music - just as music.

Considered hard to categorize, Ndegeocello's music has garnered a legion of loyal fans and a number of humbled critics. Her style is indescribable. It's R&B, it's funk, it's rock, it's neo-soul, it's soul itself, and that's what she wants music listeners to find in her music.  Her latest CD, "Cookie: the Anthropological Mixtape," follows up her 1999 release, "Bitter," which hit the streets with little fanfare unlike her 1993 debut, "Plantation Lullabies," or her 1996 sophomore set, "Peace Beyond Passion." But the problem (if we can call it that) with "Bitter," Ndegeocello suggested, was that people were expecting to categorize it.  After all, with four albums under her belt, seven Grammy nominations, and accolades from everywhere, the "singer" still remains an "underground phenomenon" that some say sparked the neo-soul movement.

"I'm just constantly trying to create and challenge myself and see what I can get to. Neo-classic-soul? I'm going to make a jazz record. I'm going to make a rock record. I'm going to do everything. The category doesn't really work for me. I'm just trying to be creative. Everybody - [we're] not doing anything different. Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin - we're just carrying on the tradition of our ancestors. I can't take any credit for anything. It's the Rhythm & Blues, it's the great American art form. I'm just continuing it on. It's all our music. I just play music - I play black music."
Furthermore, she said she has no qualms with the politics of radio formatting: "I can reach the audiences," she said. "That was the awakening. I started to feel so much better about myself when I said, 'They have their criteria and I have mine.' I've got to be true to mine and make the music I want to make. If the radio doesn't play it, I'm really ok. I did 'Bitter' and people said it wasn't a black record. I want to make art and you don't get the best thing trying to hook on to trends."

"Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape" is in stores now.

RESCHEDULED CONCERT ARETHA FRANKLIN – APRIL 16, 2003 (PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 5, 2002)

Franklin has postponed her show until Wednesday, April 16, 2003. Call her Aretha or "Lady Soul" but this living legend is a natural woman who has inspired and influenced countless female vocalists.  Aretha Franklin, has been dubbed the Queen of Soul. Not too shabby for a gal raised by her father (one of the most famous black ministers in the North), and her aunt, (legendary gospel singer Clara Ward). Franklin grew up singing in her father's New Bethel Baptist Church in Motown, but it wasn't until 1966, that her career skyrocketed. She belted out hits like "I Never Loved a Man," "Respect," "Natural Woman," and "Chain of Fools." In 1968, she made the cover of Time.   Her 1985 album, Who's Zoomin' Who, racked up her biggest sales. A 1989 gospel album, inspired by her father's coma and death (he was shot by a burglar) in 1984, earned another Grammy (15 in total) for her crowded shelf. She became the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Grammy Legend Award (1991) and was honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1994) and countless other citations, awards and accolades.
