Carlos Kleiber's Biography
Carlos Kleiber's Erich Kleiber's son left Germany in 1935 with the rest of the family and emigrated to Buenos Aires, where he began his musical training in 1950. On returning to Europe, he began studying chemistry in Zurich, but music won the upper hand. He became repetiteur at the Gartnerplatz Theatre in Munich in 1952 and went to Potsdam as director of music in 1954. He worked in the same function at the German Opera on the Rhine (Dusseldorf-Duisburg, 1958-64), in Zurich (1964-66), in Stuttgart (1966-68) and in Munich (from 1968) as conductor. He has been a guest conductor in Bayreuth, Vienna, Munich, Stuttgart, Salzburg and at the Prague Spring. He made his debut at the New York Met in 1988. An enemy of routine, he doesn't care to be bound to any particular institution, preferring to work with the major orchestras and opera houses as a guest conductor.
