Everything has to start somewhere, and US Navy K-9, Da Nang started with a class of dog handler trainees at Lackland, AFB, San Antonio, Texas.

Additional handlers and replacements went through training at Lackland, AFB, as well.  But they were parts of regular training 'flights' comprised mostly of Air Force personnel.  A very few Navy handlers received their training in the Philippines.

Upon completion of training the Class of '67 and their dogs were loaded on to two C-130's for the flight to Da Nang.  The trip took a total of 40 hours due to stops at Travis AFB, Hickam Field (Hawaii), Midway, Wake Island, Kadena AFB (Okinawa) and finally Da Nang.  The dogs were tranquilized prior to the trip and re-tranquilized in Hawaii.

Prior to going to Sentry Dog School, we all had to go through Security Police School, I seem to remember that was and Air Force requirement. And following Dog School, replacement handlers went through additional training at the Navy Base in San Diego, CA and SERE  Training (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, & Escape) at the USMC's Camp Pendleton, San Bernadino, CA.

Dog School Instructors

At the bottom of the photo of the Class of '67 there are small pictures of the instructors.  Most of them are the same instructors I had a year later.  It would therefore seem many Viet Nam era Sentry Dog handlers were the product of these few men.  So I thought I would name them here, as well
