On
Starsky and Hutch mention was made of
Starsky's family but very little of Hutch's. I always thought the episode The Plague was a missed opportunity
to bring in Hutch's parents. So here
are my missing scenes.
MISSING SCENES: THE PLAGUE
Starsky
had to get to the airport. Dobey
offered to send a patrol car to pick up Hutch's parents but Starsky felt it was
something he should do.
When
he arrived, they were already waiting.
"Hi, Mr. And Mrs. Hutchinson." Mrs. Hutchinson gave him a hug.
Mr. Hutchinson gave him a handshake.
"How is he?" Mrs.
Hutchinson asked, she was on the verge of tears. "He's critical."
Starsky said while picking up the suitcase. He couldn't look at her.
They drove in virtual silence to the hospital. Starsky left them with Judith.
He had to get back to the station to talk to Capt. Dobey.
Judith
apprised them of their son's fragile condition. Then she told them to gown up, with mask and gloves. Mr. Hutchinson said he would just look
through the window, he couldn't go into the room. Mrs. Hutchinson could hardly bear to see the condition her son
was in. She wiped his brow. She told him stories from home, how his
sister, brother-in-law and niece and nephews were doing. He would blink his eyes from time to time so
she knew he was listening. He saw his
father at the window, he seemed to be staring blankly into space. Hutch couldn't make eye contact.
Mrs.
Hutchinson looked up at the window to see her husband was gone. "Kenny, sweetheart, I'll be right
back." She stepped into the
corridor, no sign of her husband. 'Where could he be, he should be here.' She saw Mrs. Yeager heading into her son's
room. "Mrs. Yeager?" She called.
"Yes." "I just
wanted to know how your little boy was doing?" "Holding on."
She walked over to her. "My name is Elsa Hutchinson." "Oh?" Mrs. Yeager said, "The
policeman, his name is Hutchinson."
"He is my son." Mrs. Hutchinson replied. Mrs. Yeager embraced her. "I am sorry
about your little boy." They broke
their embrace and returned to their children's bedsides.
Mr.
Hutchinson returned fully gowned. He
entered his son's room. "Where
were you?" Mrs. Hutchison was annoyed.
"I went to the chapel."
"My son is going to die and I cannot help him." "Stop
that, he can hear you." Mrs. Hutchinson
scolded. "No negative
thoughts." "David is sure that they will find that Callendar man in
time." Mr. Hutchinson just sank into a chair. He was so afraid his son would die and he would never get to fix
things. He just sat in silence, it was
more than he could bear.
Starsky
bounced into his partner's room.
"How ya feeling today buddy?"
Mrs. Hutchinson answered for her son, "Wonderful, he is just
wonderful, doesn't he look great David."
"Sure does." Hutch
smiled. He looked over at Judith and said,
"Well you know Judith found the serum and made the antitoxin gave me a
shot and ala kazam Captain Marvel!"
Starsky laughed. "Captain
Marvel?" Mrs. Hutchinson
questioned, "Kenny you know you always
loved Superman." "I
can remember him flying all over the house - SUPERMAN!" "Mom!" Hutch protested he could
feel his cheeks getting flushed.
"Oh yes he loved Superman.
And he used to tell me that broccoli was kryptonite so he couldn't eat
it." "Mom, please." Judith smiled, she leaned over and gave Hutch
a kiss on the forehead. "I've got
to go." "Why?" Hutch
didn't want her to leave. "I have
other patients to see. I'll be back later, Superman."
"You
know Kenny, that Judith is a lovely girl." "Yeah I know mom."
Mr. Hutchinson was just sitting quietly in the corner. Taking in the whole lovely scene. "Elsa
we do have to be going. We have a plane
to catch." "I know, I just
hate to leave." "Mom, I am
out of here in a couple of days." "You promise to try to come home
for Thanksgiving and bring David too."
"Yes ma'am."
"Good." She leaned
over and gave him a kiss. Mr.
Hutchinson smiled at his son.
"Well son, no more scares like this OK." "You know, if
you lived in Minnesota, this never would have happened." "Dad, please."
Mr.
Hutchinson came toward his son, Hutch extended his hand expecting a firm
handshake, that was the most affection his father was capable of. Mr. Hutchinson took his son's hand and
pulled him into a warm embrace and kissed him on the cheek. Hutch was taken aback. "I hate that it took almost losing you
to make me see how much I love you son and how very proud I am of you."
"I hate that you thought that you disappointed me by becoming a
cop." "It was just fear for
you, I was afraid I would lose you and I almost did because of my
stubbornness." "Dad, you never lost me, I love you too much."
Mr. Hutchinson smiled, "I know you always thought business was the most
important thing to me, but son you are the best thing I ever did." He hugged his son again. "Get used to it Kenny, there are more
where those came from." "I
hope so Dad, you don't know how much I have wanted it." "Well goodbye and thank your Captain
for sending the car to take us to the airport." Mrs. Hutchinson gave Starsky a kiss. Mr. Hutchinson gave him a hug, "Thank you for being such a
good friend to my son." "He's
my brother Mr. Hutch."
Starsky
was staring out the window. He felt a
little awkward being there for such a personal moment. "Starsk." "Watcha
thinking?" "Nothing, I'm glad
you and your dad made up."
"Me too." Hutch could
tell Starsky was a little melancholy. "Thinking about your dad?" "Yeah, I guess." "You know Starsk, I bet you and your
dad showed each other more love in the 12 years you had then me and my dad have
in 34." "Hutch, it doesn’t
matter, as long as you show it."
