Lilac Evenings

by Paloma

The evenings are lilac,

spread with jasmine on a vine.

I pulled the Milky Way into my arms,

when I held you.

My eyes ,  full of lovers'poems

their music, like a scarf,  around your neck,

when I held you.

The beginning of my life

a prelude to our dance,

my hand on the small of your back,  clutching our history,

our hands interwined as  jasmine on the vine.

For you, my Gillian,  my heart,

I would have beat myself

if it could have saved you.

The evenings are lilac,

my arms are empty as a canyon,

my hands holding the vine of jasmine

in my sleep.
