"We don't need an electrical engineer to teach us how to cook with a microwave"

Welcome to my site. I've worn many hats in K-12 and corporate education since 1993 - science teacher, instructional designer, multimedia project manager, and middle school technology coordinator. My interests are anchored by research in teaching and learning with an emphasis in instructional technology.

I am currently a grade 8 physical science teacher at James Madison Middle School in Roanoke, Virginia. Other hats include technology and science fair coordinator. Thanks to a dedicated team of teachers and involved parents, our urban middle school leads the city on state testing in all subject areas. Last year's science pass rate was 86%!

Between 1993 and 1998, I worked in Singapore as a science teacher at an international school with students and colleagues from 45 countries. After completing graduate work at Virginia Tech in 1999, I began a carefully planned career transition from K-12 teaching and learning to adult teaching and learning.

After completing a cd-rom training project for PricewaterhouseCoopers, I worked as senior project manager with a small multimedia company in Singapore. Our project teams included artists, programmers, and business consultants from around the world. Clients included McCann-Erickson, Coca-Cola, Hewlett Packard(HP), Polycom, Standard Chartered Bank, and new internet startups.

Following the end of the Dotcom Boom (and vanishing venture capital), I returned to the United States in 2001. Following September 11th, I returned to the K-12 classroom (very happily and with no regrets).

I hold a M.A. in Curriculum & Instruction from Virginia Tech and a BA from Edinboro University in Geosciences that includes teaching training. Current research interests include the use of Geographic Information Systems to help students better understand the connections between geography and historical events. Past work has included research in learning communities with an emphasis on computer supported collaboration tools.(http://linc.cs.vt.edu/overview.html)

Learning is facilitated through authentic tasks, which are meaningful to the learner and are relevant in light of current practice.
