GENERAL HISTORY AND MISCELLANEOUS INTEREST

The examination board I use is OCR (the old MEG board. There may well be better out there but you can spend a disproportionate amount of time chasing boards over relatively little differences. They offer a complementary Certificate of Achievement to go with their GCSE courses. For what it's worth I don't think the short courses are worth the effort - you may as well enter candidates for the full GCSE.

Although I don't have much to do with them they do offer a Modern World History syllabus with a third paper instead of a coursework component. For those of you who have a nightmare of getting in coursework this may be an option.

The obligatory Department for Education. If only to keep up with what you are doing wrong!!!

QCA have a useful website for keeping up to date with changes to your subject area. Even if they don't reply with your enquiries they are quick to let you know your e-mail has been received!!!!

ROMAN HISTORY

Unfortunately much of this material is dry and 'exciting' sites are far from this. I have found many of the sites are useful as resources or tasks set for research. I give students directed activities for a number of web sites and they will then access this. Don't forget to save sites as favourites (available off line) and then you can do this task with other classes off-line. Saves money and possible problems when the server is playing up!

http://www.learn.co.uk/  I would suggest this site is your best link for the Romans and don't be too put off by the Roman history site with the bbc, it says for KS2 but it is very good for low ability Y7.

I like this site and if you link to the  http://www.learn.co.uk site you can develop some excellent lessons on women.

For a full translation of the magna carta this is worth visiting as students can see the magnitude of the document and the detail that was involved in its writing.

TUDORS AND STUARTS

SLAVERY AND BLACK HISTORY

The Ministry of Defence has made real attempts at developing some excellent historical resources and the whole issue of making resources available about black people in the Second World War is excellent. If you use it like I have you will use the images for lessons.

Channel 4 have a great wealth of information about black history on their website and this seems to be being improved all the time.

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

Quarry Bank Mill has an excellent site and you can develop lessons from it with particular emphasis on a school visit. It really is worth a trip.

For some interesting resource ideas on developing the area of the textile industry the following site is very helpful

www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Textiles.htm

This could be useful to more able students who want to develop material for a project. I personally feel making a very wordy and dull resource on the internet for students is not necessarilly the most useful way to develop this medium.

FIRST WORLD WAR

SECOND WORLD WAR

This site was recommended to me by one of my students and it really is excellent. It gives some brilliant examples of Nazi Propaganda which can be downloaded to produce some excellent worksheets or indeed use it for researching coursework.

WOMEN

This site is a useful gateway to other resources and contains information readily converted by teachers for worksheets.

I hope this has been useful - don't forget to give me your favourite sites and a brief description of what they are like.
