If you want to look at our trip to Ypres last year carry on this page
This year I took a group of Year 9 students to Ypres for a tour of the battlefields of the First World War. It proved to be a great success and has played an important part in developing history in the school.
Students really enjoyed the social aspect of the visit, we were able to develop greater historical understanding and link across a range of curriculum areas. There is no doubt that the development of better student/teacher relations is reason enough to take the effort of a trip if for nothing else.
There are clearly many pitfalls in such an undertaking. The key elements that came out of it for me are.
* Have quality staff, who are committed to ensuring that the students enjoyment is paramount.
* Have clear objectives of what you want from the trip.
* Ensure students work and bond as a team.
* Be constantly thinking about how the following year can be improved and developed upon.
I decided to use a travel company that could organise the four days for me. The cost was very reasonable and I had the peace of mind knowing that I didn't have to think of everything. We used ADVENT travel this year however, there are several very competitive companies out there- so shop around.
Plan early and then speak to a school that has done a similar visit so that you can organise things thoroughly. Believe me, even when you use a tour company, there is a never-ending list of things to do! But it really is worth it. While we were on our trip we were planning the next!
