Western Horsemanship (Stock Seat Equitation) The western horsemanship class is designed to evaluate the rider's ability to execute, in concert with their horse, a set of maneuvers prescribed by the judge with precision and smoothness while exhibiting poise and confidence, and maintaining a balanced, functional and fundamentally correct body position. ATTIRE AND EQUIPMENT These are general guidelines. Check the rules of each breed or show organization for more detail. Attire Long sleeved shirt with collar, long pants, boots, western hat. Helmet, chaps and spurs are optional. Equipment Saddle Horses shall be shown with a stock saddle with horn. Silver will not count over working equipment. Headstalls May be plain or embellished with silver and have a slip, split or shaped ear single or double ear or browband. Reins Split reins - held in one hand (no changing hands) with one finger through if riding with a curb bit. Rein ends hang off side of rein hand. If riding with a snaffle bit (O-ring, D-ring, eggbutt), reins must be held in both hands with reins crossed over neck. Romel - may be used with a curb bit only. Use one hand (no changing hands), no fingers between and tail of romel held in off hand. Mecate reins - may be used with a bosal. Prohibited equipment includes tie-down, noseband, mechanical hackamore, roping reins CLASS PROCEDURE These are general guidelines. Check the rules of each breed or show organization for more detail. Individual Work A pattern posted before the class may be performed. It may include maneuvers normally required in a stock horse class such as circles, figure-8, pivots, stops, sidepassing. Any pattern must include all three gaits (unless a walk/jog class) and back.. Rail Work The judge may recall all the contestants, just the finalists or may place the class from individual work. Horses recalled will enter the ring at the walk and riders will be judged on the rail at walk, jog and lope both directions. There shall be correct leads during the lope. The reverse shall be away from the rail and shall be continous with no break of gait. Riders may be asked to line up in center of arena to back or may be asked to back on the rail. |
