Here is a film that desperately wants to be just like Academy Award winning Crash, but can't live up to it. The story revolves around group of people all connected to a shooting in Morocco. Richard(Brad Pitt) and Susan(Cate Blanchett) are on a tour of the Moroccan desert when tradgedy strikes as Susan is shot while riding in the bus. Amelia(Adriana Barraza) is a nanny who takes care of the couple's children. She takes the children to wedding in Mexico and runs into trouble coming back. Cheiko(Rinko Kikuchi) is a young deaf girl who has just lost her mother, is mostly ignored by her father, and can't seem to make a connecction with anyone. There is also another story which depicts who the crime happens itself. For the most part this is a good film. Where it lacks though is the amount of time spent on each part of the film. We spend way to much time on the Japanese girl, whose connection to the rest of the film isn't much. I would have preferred more time spent on Richard and Susan's struggles. There characters seemed more intresting. When you make a film like this you need to focus on the groups of people that the audience will make the best connection too. Somewho I don't thing an american audience is going to connect well with a lonely Japenese teenager. |
