| Much has been made that when a musician decides to try acting they usually fall flat on there face, mostly because they have never had a acting lesson. Mariah Carey is a good example of this. Well recently I had the privelage of watching this new film that stars a musician in her first acting stint. I am of course talking about the one and only Britney Spears. Britney stars as Lucy Wagner, a small-town girl who is about to graduate from high-school with the highest honors. The film revolves around Lucy and her two ex-bestfriends Kit(Zoe Salanda) and Mimi(Taryn Manning). Years ago they barried a box containing there most wanted wishes and then plan to dig it up at there graduation night. That night has come and when they dig it up, we find out that Lucy's wish is to see her mom, who left her dad years ago. Kit's wish is to get married and Kit's is to simply leave her hometown. The next day the three girls set out on a long adventure to fulfill there wishes while riding in a vehicle owned by Ben Kimble(Anson Mount) who offers to give them a ride to there destinations. I was muched surpised by Britney's performance. She plays her character well and is very likable in this film. Manning also does a good job playing the trailer-trash Mimi. Unfortunately those are the few bright spots of this film. First of all is it really necessary to have the male character ride along with these girls on the journey. The guy looks out of place. He should be driving a station wagon around a retirement home. I think Richard Roeper put is best when he described Anson Mount as "Not a young man, not yet a old geezer." The love story between Ben and Lucy is cheezy and not necessary. Without it they probably could have wrote a better ending. The was the low point of the film. At the beginning of the film so much emphasis is put on Lucy and finding her mother, yet it all adds up to about 2 minutes and the film still drags on for another half-hour. Britney Spears **** Crossroads * Overall **1/2 |
