Gangs of New York is the latest film to come from director Martin Scorsese. I went in to this film expected to be blown away by a Scorsese masterpiece, but came out a little disappointed. The film is set back in New York in 1946. When the film begins we realize that their is conflict going on between the white Anglo-Saxon "natives" and the Irish immigrants. We witness a battle where the Irish immigrants are defeated and there faithful leader, Priest Vallon(Liam Neeson), is killed. Vallon's death is witnessed by his son. The film then moves 17 years ahead. Vallon's son, Amsterdam(Leonardo DiCaprio) has returned to New York for the first time since his fathers death. He is out for revenge against Bill the Butcher(Daniel Day-Lewis) who killed his father. In the meantime Amsterdam falls in love with a young lady named Jenny(Cameron Diaz). This film isn't a bad film, but it isn't a great film. How many times must we witness the a plot in which somebody sees a family member get killed at the beginning of the film and then have to sit nearly 3 hours to watch him finally get his revenge. The plot is getting worn out. I am going let it slide this time because Gangs of New York is a good film as a whole, but next time I may not be to kind. This film is a slight underachivement, but still worth seeing. |
