Paul Giammatti stars as Cleveland Heep, an apartment building superintendent, who rescues a young women named Story(Bryce Dallas Howard) from the complex swimming pool. What he finds out soon after is that Story is actually a character from a bedtime story and he must help her get home. The film also stars director M. Night Shylamalan. This is the most unusual film I have ever seen. The idea is unique and interesting. The problem is that it was executed incorrectly. Giammatti is a great actor whose talents are wasted in this film thanks to a studder his character has. Howard was great in the subpar The Village, but seems a little lost in this film in part thanks to the fact her character isn't allowed to talk for periods of time during the film. Shylamalan is well known for is mysterious films that have shocking twists in them. This film is mysterious, but there is no twist. The whole story revolves around one idea and that is the only idea the film accomplishes. Not a very good attempt for this director this go around. This film just failed on too many levels. |
