There is something to be said about seeing a movie an advanced screening a film. The theatre is packed full, you have to get there 30 minutes early, and you quite often have to get tickets in advance(you might also see some guy named Brody with a video camera and big bag of gummy bears), yet it always seems to be something special about it. Anyways, this new film stars Kurt Russell as the late Coach Herb Brooks, in a portrayl of the 1980 Olympics where the U.S. shockingly won gold. This film reminds me much of Seabuscuit. They start the film by discussing events from the time period and how the U.S. was at a down time..Then they build to the big event that captured the heart of the U.S. This film is a decent portrayal of the event and the hockey sequences are remarkable. Yet something wasn't right with it. Seabiscuit follows its story to the very end. This movie felt like it was cut short. They spend 2 hours building up to the Olympics. They spend the next half hour and the game against Russia and then quit. It's like they decided this couldn't be a three hour film so we are going to have to cut something out. So instead they show the U.S. beating Russia and then say oh by the way we went on to win the gold medal. I felt like I was robbed. Nonetheless, this was a decent film and Kurt Russell turns in a good performance. |
