Last year actor Paul Giamatti made a film called American Splendor. If I had reviewed it in time, I would have had it on my top 10 list. Giamatti gave a excellent performance in that film. He does the exect same in his new film. He stars Miles Raymond, a not yet published writer and school teacher who goes to California's wine country for a week with his soon to be married actor friend Jack, played by Thomas Hayden Church. While there they take on new relationships as well as reflect on there past relationships and failures. This film also starred Virginia Madsen, Sandra Oh, and Marylouise Burk. This is a great piece of work. It reminded me so much of the film Swingers. Director Alexander Payne, best known for Election, has a wonderful script to work with and does a great job. Giamatti and Church give great performances. This film also has a classic scene on a golf which I still laugh about everyday and probably will continue laughing about everytime I step foot on a golf course. Sideways is an enjoyable and clever film. |
