1888 - 1968 War Service: October 28, 1915 to September 10, 1919; First Highland Brigade - British Army - Rank - Gunner After working in Canada for eight years, Bill returned to Scotland to visit his mother and enlisted in the British Army. He was one of five brothers who were in the service, all of whom survived. He served in France on the "Western Front" until November 1918, at which time he was reassigned to a British force that was sent to the Black Sea to protect the oilfields owned by Britain during the Bolshevik revolution. He seldom spoke of his life in the army. He did mention his experience when the Germans used mustard gas and how he used his gas mask to survive. Bill was discharged in September 1919 and returned to Canada. He moved to the Tyrone District in 1921 and purchased a farm through the Veterans Land Act. He married Miss Amelia Davidson in 1928 and they had one son, John. They farmed until 1961 and moved to Lashburn where they spent their retirement years. Bill died on June 17, 1968 at the age of 79. |
