Donald joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in June 1941.

His first ship was H. M. C. S. Courtney, a minesweeper.  In the fall of 1942 he was drafted to Halifax and then th H. M. C. S. Kentville, another minesweeper.

In January 1943 he was drafted to the corvette H. M. C. S. Sackville on trans-Atlantic convoy duty.  The Sackville was the lone survivor of the four escorts in action that saw the sinking of   H. M. C. S. St. Crois, a Canadian destroyer.  Most of the crews of the three ships were lost.

He took a Radar 2 course and was then drafted to H. M. S. Kent, a Royal Navy Cruiser.  Donald was in on the action that saw the sinking of the German Pocket Battleship, Tirpitz.

Later drafted to H. M. C. S. Ontario, a Canadian cruiser being built in Belfast, Ireland, commissioned in mid-1945.

Donald saw action in the North Atlantic, North Sea, Irish Sea and Arctic Ocean.  He was discharged in January 1946.

H. M. C. S. Sackville is now a museum piece and is permanently docked in Halifax.
