Daniel Lamont
World War I
Born in Kilbarken, Scotland - October 14, 1890

No:  114094

Came to Canada in 1910 and homesteaded in the Dry Gully District in 1911.

January 4, 1915 he joined the 9th Canadian Machine Gun Regiment, 52nd Battalion, Manitoba Rifles.  Sent overseas in November 1915.  Daniel trained in England, then was sent to France in early 1916.  He served in the Transport Division at Vimy Ridge and Ypres leading mule trains loaded with ammunition and water to the front lines.  He came through unscathed on his white horse Tony.  On the last trip from the front at Vimy, after dismounting from Tony, and about 20 yards away, he was wounded by shrapnel in the knee which he had for the rest of his life.  He was awarded mention in dispatches for gallantry in action.  He bought Tony and sent him to a friend in Scotland where he lived out his life on a stock farm.

Dan always said, "Next to the Germans, their worst enemy was the mud, rats and lice".

Dan was discharged in March 1919 and came back to his farm in Dry Gully.  He married Dorothy Morrison on August 10, 1921.

Daniel passed away September 1, 1967.
