Born: August 6, 1924, Lashburn, Saskatchewan John joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in June 1942. He took his basic training at H. M. C. S. Unicorn, Saskatoon and continued with advance training at H. M. C. S. Naden, Victoria, BC. John took his Asdic course at H. M. C. S. Stadacona, Halifax. John was drafted aboard H. M. C. S. Annapolis, a destroyer, April 1943. He was then transferred to Fairmiles, July 1943 and served on 059, 061, and 097. These U-boat chasers were small ships having a small crew of up to 25 men. They were fast and armed with small guns and lots of depth charges. They operated out of Halifax, St. John's and Boston. A lot of time was spent chasing U-boats in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. John was drafted aboard H. M. C. S. Riviers du Loup, a corvette in October 1944, but was injured in early November and was hospitalised in St. John's, Newfoundland. On recovery he was drafted aboard H. M. C. S. Royal Mount, a frigate at the end of November. They were on the trans-Atlantic convoy escort, as well as patrolling the North Sea and Irish Sea. He came back to Canada in July 1945 and was discharged in September 1945. John passed away May, 1996. |
