March 25, 1882 - June 21, 1967 Regimental Number: 237093 Rank: Sergeant Major Enlisted: 1899 Discharged: 1902 Left for South Africa from Paddington Station, London. Served in Transvaal, The Orange Free State and Cape Colony as well as other areas. Part of the time he was a scout in the cavalry and had two horses shot from under him. When his favourite horse "Major" was shot, his knee cap was shot off and for the rest of his life he had a metal knee cap. The above photo was taken in England when Gordon was 17 years old. It was blown up to six feet tall with "WE NEED YOU" printed above it and was used for recruiting purposes. |
