Police say four Papuan students arrested over flag-raising
Four students from the Indonesian province of Papua have reportedly been arrested in
Central Java for flying a separatist flag tied to balloons.
A police spokesman says the four were detained separately on Wednesday in the
city of Semarang.
The spokesman says the flag was released during a rally by students from Papua in
Semarang on Monday - the 41st anniversary of the proclamation of a West Papua
state.
Authorities had warned they would not tolerate any flag-raising to mark the
anniversary.
He says the students could be charged with treason, which carries up to 20 years'
jail.
