In 1326 Wallington Tower passed to de Strother. Alan de Strother is recorded as its owner in 1352. In the list of 1415 it belonged to William Strother. In the reign of Henry IV, Sir John Fenwick married Mary Strother, heiress and thus acquired the estate. For several hundred years the Fenwicks owned the estate. The last Fenwick was John, who was a Jacobite, and for that he had his head cut off by King William (William & Mary) King William took one of John Fenwick's horses at that time and one day while he was riding this horse, the horse bolted and William fell off and was killed. This is what is still called John Fenwick's Revenge!
Marjorie Strother says, "When this last Fenwick died, the estate was taken over by the Crown. Later the estate was sold to another family and the castle was dismantled and the present Hall was constructed. I will admit I was reprimanded by a guard at Wallington Tower for taking a picture. When I saw our Crest with the 4 eagles, I had to take the picture. Marjorie Strother is from King George, VA. She was a Strother and married her Strother cousin.

 Fenwick Barb
Sire of (Old) Why Not, sire of Snail (c. 1711, racehorse and sire) and the filly Grey Whynot, who was the dam of the important sire Bald Galloway, the mare Points (Family 15, dam of Flying Whigg) and her sister (also seen in Family 15). Sir John Fenwick of Northumberland served as Master of the Royal Stud and surveyor of the royal race for Charles I; he either owned or had sold to the Royal Stud at Tutbury several mares, likely obtained from the same sources used by George Villiers, primarily Spanish and Italian. His horses were referred to as the Fenwick Breed, and according to the first Duke of Newcastle he had "...more Rare Running-Horses than all Eng besides, and the most part of all the Famous Running Horses in Eng, that ran one Against another, wer of his Race and Breed." The Fenwick Barb was owned, and probably imported, by Sir John Fenwick (3rd) Baron. His Northumberland property was sold in 1689 -- another early thoroughbred breeder, Sir William Blackett, purchased Fenwick Tower. Sir John was executed in 1697 for treason in conspiring against William III. A descendant, William Fenwick of Bywell, was the owner of the good racemare Duchess and of the influential stallion Matchem.

Fenwick Name
General Francis Laye first marriage was to Margaret Brown. Margaret had a sister, Jane Brown who married Ralph Fenwick. Hence Francis and Ralph were brother-in-laws. There seems to be some bond- whether friendship or blood - based on the names- as in Francis' son, Francis Fenwick Laye, and Jane Francis Fenwick.   Ralph married Jane Brown in 1807 and their children were: Eleanor Mary Fenwick b 1808 m Charles Brown; Charles Richard Fenwick b 1822, Julia Fenwick b 1809 m John Simpson; William John Fenwick b 1816; Isabella Fenwick b 1817 m John Marston, Mary Fenwick b 1812, d 1813; Henry Fenwick b 1818; Jane Francis Fenwick b 1810; Rakoh Fenwick b 1814. The Fenwicks lived in Streatham, Surrey.
