Poetry

Students practice their reading and writing skills at the “Poetry Center.” They learn about different types of poetry, as well as work on their reading and writing skills. They also enhance their ability to play with words (Diller, 92).

Teachers need to model how to:

·        Use a store materials

·        read a poem fluently

·        read with good expression

·        find rhyming words

·        determine the pattern of the poem

·        make connections

·        create visual images

·        illustrate a poem

·        buddy read a poem

·        write a poem

·        compare two poems

Materials


·        Poster size poems

·        Small version of poems (laminated in a basket or tub)

·        Sentence strips that match the poems

·        Rhymes and tongue twisters

·        Songbooks

·        Poet information

·        Pointers (for large poems)

·        Rhyming dictionary

·        Class poetry books


 

Activities

·        Read a poem

 

·        Choral, buddy, and silent reading

 

·        Find your spelling (or other high frequency) words in the poem

 

·        Write a poem

 

·        Color/illustrate the poem

 

·        Fill in the blanks of a poem

 

·        Copy short poems onto sentence strips. Students need to put the sentence strips in order as they are in the poem.

 

·        Respond to the poem with a drawing

 

·        Respond to the poem with an art project

 

·        Copy the poem for handwriting practice

 

·        Circle parts of speech

 

·        List parts of speech

 

·        Circle particular items (all winter words etc.)

 

·        Find a pattern in the poem

 

·        Compare two poems

 

·        Some poems are put on sentence strips and placed in a pocket chart. mixed-up words, or lines; poem with art directions; parts of speech using different colored sentence strips
