1944 Ford GPW

D.O.D. 19 October 1944

Chassis# 230463

Engine# 230463

Body# 139150

*Hood# USA 20582238 S

*  Estimated hood number, I have no references of actual hood number

I bought this Ford GPW in October 2004 it was restored, converted to 12 volts and painted DESERT SAND. The previous owner told me it was a 1943 Ford GPW, but after a little research I found out that it actually is a 1944 Ford GPW. The "jeep" is in a quite good original state, the engine serial number  matches the chassis serial number, it has the original bell housing, transmission and transfer case. The body is original, but not in a too good shape. The rear panel needs replacing and there are some holes in the floor that shouldn't be there. The "jeep" was covered in a thick layer of body filler, I used a chisel and heat gun to get all that body filler off. Once I had the body cleaned from all the body filler I could see the extension of the damage to the body. It looks like the front side panels on both sides need some work, there are pretty big dents in it especially on the spots where there is a spot weld. The cowl has had some repairs to it, but it looks like it needs some more work. I don't know if I'm up to this kind of restoring. I have been reading lots of posts on G503 message board, this helps so much, but I still wonder if I'm up to it.  I will have to invest in a welding machine and an air compressor to get the job done.

I was going to drive the car till May 2005 and then start restoring it, but I had a leak in the transfer case, so I decided to start the restoration now (January 2005) I nearly completed taking the car apart only the tub is left on the chassis. when I start building the car back up it will be converted back to 6 volts, and it will get it's original OLIVE DRAB color back. The major electrical part I still need is the 6 volts regulator. I bought the wiring set from MV Spares . There are still lots of electrical parts and other parts I need. Click here to see a list of parts I still require

I have been buying quite a few things from ebay to complete what ever I need, but it seems like there is no end to it. The parts are getting harder to find, whether they are originals, NOS (New Old Stock) or repro, and if you find the parts you want they are very expensive, and due to shipping it gets even more expensive.
