INTRODUCTIONSince Esperanto spelling is strictly phonemic (i.e. there's a one-to-one correspondence between the letters and the meaningful sounds in the language), the Esperanto alphabet song will actually help you learn to sing Esperanto texts (unlike the English alphabet song, which is rendered almost useless unless all you want to learn is the alphabet itself by our complex and irregular spelling system). These notes are intended to help you get started. They are intended particularly for those non-Esperanto-speakers who may wish to sing Esperanto song lyrics with an acceptable accent without actually learning the language.
Esperanto uses the following 28-letter alphabet:
Upper-case:A B C Ĉ D E F G Ĝ H I J Ĵ K L M N O P R S Ŝ T U Ŭ V Z Lower-case:a b c ĉ d e f g ĝ h ĥ i j ĵ k l m n o p r s ŝ t u ŭ v z
VOWELS
There are five vowels: A E I O U. They are pronounced basically as they are in Italian, Spanish, Swahili or Hawaiian. The closest English sounds are basicallyNON-ENGLISH LETTERS
- "a" as in the second syllable of "aha!"
- "e" as in "lei"
- i as in marine
- o as in note
- u as in rune
As you can see, four of our English letters (Q, W, X and Y) are missing, while there are six additional letters (Ĉ, Ĝ, Ĥ, Ĵ, Ŝ and Ŭ).
