Arthur "Dutch Schultz" Flegenheimer

He was a brutal orginaizer, he controlled the entire beer and liqour industry of Harlem and the Bronx, plus all the numbers and all the restaurant extortion. He was known for his violent temper and nonconformist attitude, he bucked formation or the modern Syndicate, and beat the government in an income tax case just a few years after Al Capone was sent to the Rock for the same charge. Then he tried to assasinate Thomas E. Dewey. That was when the Syndicate killed him(October 23, 1935).

He joined the Bergan Ave. Gang at tage 14, then joined the Fox Hollow Gang at age 17, with such hoods as Joey Rao and the original Dutch Scultz(a onetime prizefighter) Jack "Legs" Diamond worked for him briefly and then branched out on his own. Dutch Schultz had over 100 men working for him. He worked for The Rock Brothers, a pair of bootleggers. He kidnapped Joe Rock and held him hostage until the Rock Brothers agreed to surrender all their beer action to the Schultz Gang. Joe Rock lost an eye during the kidnapping. The Rocks were briefly allowed to hang on to the liquor business as compensation. Scultz became partners with Joe "joey" Noe.

Dutch moved in on one bootleg operation after the other, then moved in the numbers racket in 1931 Harlem, where several highly prosperous policy banks were operating, some bringing in more than $4,000 a week a piece. By 1933 Scultz was cleaning up $20,000,000 a year from the numbers alone. By sheer trror Dutch cut himself a piece of the action, laying low those who would not bow to his extortive demands. He then moved in to "Legs" Diamonds territory and the 1927 Scultz and "Legs" Diamond wore began. Joey Noe was killed on West 54th Street near the Harding Hotel in 1929. Scultz swore revenge and had 5 of his gunman; Frank "Blubber" Devlin, Eugene Moran, James Balto, "Monkey" Schubert, and Harry Veasey kill Eddie Diamond in a cabaret in Denver, Colo. They shot him several times, but he lived. The five men were later killed by "Legs" Diamond gunmen. "Blubber" Devlin shot once in the head on March 3, 1929 in Somerville, New Jersey. Eugene Moran was riddled and his body cremated on a bonfire in August 1929. James Balto in1929, "Monkey" Schubert in 1929, and Harry Veasly in 1929.

In October 1929 in Kiki Roberts(mistress of Legs Diamond) suite in New York's Hotel Monticello three of Dutch's men wounded Legs Diamond. Five bullets were taken from "Legs", but he lived. After this attack "legs" sailed to Europe on a Baltic cruise ship. He was not welcome in Europe or any other place, so he returned to New York. "Legs" was shot several times as he emerged from the Aratoga Inn in April, 1931, again he lived. On December 17, 1931( or Dec.19,1931) after a party Leg's went to a small boarding house at 67 Dove Street. Jack "Legs" Diamond was shot at 4:45 am and killed by five bulets( or 17) to the head and torso. This time Legs Diamond was dead. He was killed by Schultzs ace gunman "Bo" Weinburg. So ended the Schultz-Diamond war.

But Dutch was in a war against time. One of his men, Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll along with his brother Pete who had wnt on thier own. The war was brief, but bloody. Coll tried to kill Schultzs lieutenant "Joey" rao on a Manhattan street with machinegun bullets, but killed a five year old boy and wounding five more kids. This gave Coll the nickname "Mad Dog". He was caught and went to trial. This trial thurned into a farce. Coll was aquitted.

Vincent Coll went into hiding after Dutch stepped up his attack on him. He was tracked to a rooming house in Manhattans Chelsea district. On Febuary 8, 1932, Coll left his room and went to a telephone booth at 8th Ave. andWest 23rd Street drugstore. While he was on the phone, three men pulled up in a car "Bo" Weinburg got out walked in the drugstore, pulled out a machinegun from beneath his long coat and opened fire. The glass booth exploded and Coll stumbled out dead.
