Mary and Martha
Today's Gospel: Luke's account of the story of Mary and Martha, you know the one.

Today, Fr. I-don't-know-his-name spoke on the fact that we are to be both a Mary and a Martha. It was an excellent homily, and here I will recount the main points.

Being a Martha: Martha was the "active" one. And, as we develop as a servant of God, we follow a path that goes this way:

Purgative Way: This is the stage in which major sins are worked out of our lives. At the same time, though, we seek to control ourselves in minor areas, so that we do not fall slave to our impulses. The goal of the purgative way is to purge sin and feed virtue.

Illuminative Way: Out of, and overlapped with, the purgative way is the illuminative way. Here we start shining as a Light of God to those around us. Compassion is the key in this step.

Unitive Way: At this stage, our wills are in tune with God's. Ultimately, this is the goal of our Faith. Many do not reach it until after death, though it is possible to reach it here on Earth.

At the same time that we are Marthas, sharing the fruit of this process through service to those around us, we are called to be Marys. Being a Mary leads to growth from one step to the next. By keeping our eyes ever on Jesus, we continue on the path toward Him. However, we must be careful not to ignore those around us as we strive Heaven-ward.

I thought it was a good message, though I, unfortunately, don't remember the details as well as I should...
