2004-06-23 - 11:18 a.m. I've been thinking about the nature of knowledge somewhat this summer. I've come to a conclusion: we actually KNOW very little. Think about it. Do you KNOW that that computer screen in front of you exists? Oh, you do? How so? You can see it? Well, how do you know that your senses give you reliable knowledge? Ah. Just as I thought. You just do. Ultimately, once you get to that point, the reasoning has to be circular. In other words, reliability of the senses is an assumption. No more. Now, I'm not going to say that we can know nothing. We certainly can. So, I'm compiling a list of things that we can know, without a doubt. Before I start the list, let me give you the qualifications for certain knowledge. Something is certain if the denying of it necessitates its truth. For example "I deny my existence". Clearly false, as one must exist in order to deny something. So, here's the list I've got so far. Feel free to add to it. 1. I exist. 2. I think. 3. Time exists. 4. I act. 5. Language exists. That's all I've come up with so far. If you have more, feel free to comment! Of course, if they're not REALLY knowable, then I'll have to disagree with you. |
