Zea Barker is a self-taught, hand-drawn and stop-motion animator. Her unique animation process begins with hand-drawn characters, shooting involves a blending of hand-drawn animation and stop-motion. All editing and postproduction is handled digitally. Popsicle is a three minute short using this technique and was made with generous assistance from Lisa Bufano. Zea has also done a couple stop-motion animations, largely in-camera edited, using Super 8 film. The latest is a short piece for the Dresden Dolls Electronic Press Kit which she co-edited and produced with Michael Pope.
The most recent work is a melding of animation with live-action in the new Bony Lil film shorts Creation & Distraction which have yielded ten minutes of hand crafted animation. Conceived and Designed by Zea Barker; Shot, Cut, and Directed by Michael Pope: They are a silent comedic exploration of the creative process as shown by Bony Lil. A sneak peak at Distraction and the Popsicle animation toured nationally with Fuck the Backrow: A Dresden Dolls multimedia concoction featuring a variety of short films and live performances. Creation has test-screened at small venues locally. Film festival submissions have begun.
Zea was commissioned to do animation for a P.S.A. for a study at Emerson University in late 2007. The animation process has begun to gel and is becoming easier to do in a somewhat timely manner. With experience comes efficiency, relatively speaking. The dawning of professional animation. WIll animate for wads of cash. |
