Zea began studying Dance and Theatre at an early age, starting with Ballet, Tap and Jazz, Karate and solid theatre programs in both elementary and high schools. She attended the National High School Institute's Acting program at Northwestern University as a high school junior where she studied acting basics as well as the suzuki technique, yoga, virtual movement and solo performance. At Boston University, Zea studied a wide range of dance disciplines from ballet to modern, afro-brazilian, contact improvisation and the melding of it all with choreography. She learned techniques for integrating voice and movement including the Alexander and Linklater techniques. Zea also studied choreography at the Martha Graham School in New York City. Her Senior Thesis consisted of cultivating the necessary group skills and trust between dancers to withstand and florish in a 20 minute improvisation to a musicscape the dancers heard for the first time opening night. Beyond University, Zea has continued exploration into movement disciplines through studies in the martial arts, Tai Chi and Shintaido, as well as Butoh and Classical Ballet. Improvisation is her true passion and her broad range of studies over the years yields a wealth of physical language to draw on. |
