Limerick's most famous European encounter was with the Spanish giants Real Madrid. The first league of the tie was played in Dublin which resulted in a disasterously low revenue for Limerick. Limerick lost 2-1 in Dublin their only goal coming from a late penalty. The second league in Spain resulted in a 5-1 win for the home team.
