S.C.I.E.N.C.E., the 1997 debut from southern California's Incubus, was the sound of five childhood friends trying to make their disparate influences heard. The then-burgeoning rap/metal community quickly embraced the album's schizoid mix of funk grooves, hip-hop rhythms and downtuned, bone-crunching riffs.
The new album, Make Yourself, does away with the abrupt tempo changes and stylistic shifts that characterized S.C.I.E.N.C.E. while it retains the group's heavy, groove-oriented sound.
"The more I listen to the stuff I recorded for this album, the more I'm reminded of Andy Summers," says Einziger. "I love the sound of lots of delay and reverb over a clean guitar. It's something I never got the chance to try on the first record. But that's partly the reason why we chose to call the album Make Yourself. It really sums up where we are right now. It's about taking control of the controllable elements in your life and not being ruled by fear or trends."
