A new species of spirulina from India(spirulina mahajanii sp.nov.)

Spirulina is a blue green alga which in recent time is of considerable importance both from food and therapeutic points of view. In 1974 it was declared as "best food for tomorrow" in world food conference and world population conference organised by the united Nations.

During Limnological studies this alga was collected from a small tank of Govt. Post-graduate college,Khargone,Madhya pradesh. In vegetarians this alga is used to cure chronic patients suffering from protein deficiency that leads to the deficiencies of Iodine, iron element and Vitamin B-12. Besides, it cures rheumatism, arhritis, diabetes, lactation and stimulates thyroid glands to regulate cholesterol synthesis in the body. Moreover this alga also checks the dreadful cancer disease. Its other uses are in sericulture and moriculture.

Industrialists have scope to earn money by culturing this alga on commercial basis. Varios preparations of spirulina are availablle in the form of creams, tablets and pills that are sold in the market under the names of Zyrulina, Lactogil, Multinol and Pastelina. Hence due to multipurpose uses, this alga has attracted the people throughout the world.

Recently Bombay natural history Society (BNHS),an Internattional orgnisation has accepted my research paper on this new species to publish in the New Descriptions Section of the journal of BNHS.

Dr.T.V.Desikachary, an eminent phycologist and other phycologists have written me personal letters about the separate entity of this alga and also remarked their positive opinios in some of their publications.

Thus it is a matter of great pride for Khargone district that it has earned name at global level to discover a new blue green alga from this area which is named S.mahajanii
