Fish & Chips |

MAIN | Im sure everyone has their favourite fish and chips meal be they breaded or battered. I personally prefer the battered version to the breaded version. But frankly its quite tough to find a GOOOOOD fish and chips deal in Singapore. Most standard fare use dory fish as opposed to trying some more exotic types. Anyhow, here's my thots on some fish and chips outlets here:

CAFE VIENNA, ROYAL PLAZA ON SCOTTS - This is my DEFINITE favourite. Aside from their spectacular bread and butter pudding, their fish and chips is something to crave for. Less oily than the other versions, Cafe Vienna serve splendidly battered fish using often red snapper rather than dory. So when you crunch through the crispy batter, you're faced with this extremely meaty white, tender soft fish meat - superlicious! And they're generous with the tartar sauce too...be thick skin and ask for more if you wish - they surely cant deny a spending customer like u ! Beyond the fish, Cafe Vienna also supplement their dish with generous portions of thick cut crispy fries, complemented by a refreshing, slightly vinegretted garden vegetables. The price is slightly higher than your standard fare - about $15 ++ but this is one fish and chips meal that keeps you full the whole night through....
LONG JOHNS SILVER - Although their fish has somehow shrunk in size and portions lately, its still what i would consider as good, easy-to-access, fish and chips meal. What makes it good? Its battered of course! MAK'S PLACE, Opp Wisma Indah. Mak's Place whips up quite a mean fish and chips with generous portions of fries. Though using dory fish and breaded, what sets marks place aside is that they also provide a bowl of salad and soup as complementary dishes to the meal...well they used to anyway, heard lately they scrapped it to cut costs... BANQUET OUTLETS - Standing at a cheap $5+, banquet serves up a huge slice of breaded dory complete with fries and some side salad. Its quite good and is a definite bargain. Sometimes if I'm out of ideas to eat at banquet, I'd just pick this simple dish. Other than this, Im sure there are other fish and chips outlet. I remember for instance having tried a fish and chips basket at a small cafe at East Coast (behind MacDonalds). Cafe's called 'Joe' something and they serve a wonderful battered fish, a bit more oily than usual though. Then if I'm not wrong there's also Swensens that serves a totally forgettable fish and chips meal. Anyway, its known that a good batter for fish was usually whipped with beer as it airates the flour giving it that light and crispy feel. Friends who've studied in Aussie land had related stories of how they'd meticulously check if restaurants there use beer in their batter to ensure for halalness. As using beer is out of the question for me, I've found that substituting soda water works wonders as well. Try it! |
