SHOOK! KL, JW Marriot - there's loads of hype about this restaurant in KL surrounding its open-air cooking. The food, however, leaves much to be desired. I had a forgettable meal - truly forgetable cos I cant quite remember what I ate (yes its that bad) and my hubby had a lamb dish that could have been better done. The waiters are civil, I can certainly see they're well trained, though it would be good if they added more warmth in their service. The price - Steep! The saving grace is their bathrooms which are clean and come with attached wash basins. A definite can-miss if you're scouting for food joints in KL! |

MARCHE KL, Renaissance Hotel - hmm...I had expected the Marche setup here to be like the busy 'market place' environment as the Singapore outlets. Unfortunately its not - its absolute fine dinning, with waiters in black uniforms, white starched tablecloths, music etc. Put aside all those trappings, the food is actually quite good. Well, at least the steak in butter mushroom sauce was superb!Yep, the sauce I must say was one of a kind - thick, creamy, mushroomy - a definite yum!! I had a chicken bolognaise spaghetti which i felt could have been better improved with other side dishes eg garlic breads, whole chickens etc. Nevertheless, the meal was quite splendid and Marche gave us loadfuls of different flavoured Italian breads as appetizers, certainly very generous! The waiters were warm, friendly, attentive and, err, groovy. Price wise - generally reasonable for fine dinning. For the Muslims- do specify that you want your food 'alcohol free' as they do use alcohol in some of their sauces. ROTIBOY, KL, KLCC - Oh boy, these superlicious coffee flavoured buns are simply to die for. Grab them hot, get a teh trik and start dipping them buns in tea for a super perk-me-up! LAKSA SHACK KL, KLCC - From nonya laksa, bali laksa, thai laksa, penang laksa, curry laksa, you name it, they've got it. I personally tried the nonya laksa which was generous, delicious and simply authentic! A must try for laksa lovers out there. HAMEED'S KL, Central Market - A typical nasi kandar outlet, this place serves excellent fish curries, battered prawns, aloo ghobi and tea! We had a lunch comprising of huge prawns, chicken, vege, papadum, fish and meat curries, battered squids and teh tarik for a good RM20+. Talk about cheap! But beware, we found out that a similar Hameed's outlet at KLCC, tho serving the same fare, charges supreme prices. We had to pay above RM20 for 2 battered prawns there! MADAM KWAN's, 5th floor KLCC - This busy old style chinese kopitiam set up serves up a delectable variety of dishes with the greatest of speed I've ever seen. Really! The waiters and waitresses are so super fast, they're there with your food and clear your table within the blink of an eye. We've tried their Laksa which was quite good, though what was more delicious was their nasi lemak with super power achaaaaa! For a chinese restaurant, it sure cooks good nonya food!Try their various desserts too...pure heaven with the all-natural taste, no shortcuts in ingredients used. Watch out for your pocket tho as prices are quite steep. AL-MARJAN, 5th floor KLCC - a new setup, this place serves one of the more authentic middle eastern deals I've tasted in years, much better than those in Singapore. Born of Iranian cooks and staff, Al-Marjan is truly quite a pearl in the heart of KLCC. Its got a buffet menu for the true middle eastern enthusiast. I skipped it, instead I tried their saffron chicken - nicely grilled, fragrant and so tenderly soft and spiced. Dont be fooled by this white rice pilau they have. It looks like plain rice but oooohhhh the taste is wonderful. My hubby tried the lamb dish which sent him to 7th heaven upon biting... |
